The great divide

In the face of poverty and a lack of sanitation, many outsiders view these townships with fear. However, we were almost always treated respectfully. Once Sidewalk Specials became regular visitors and our motivations were clear, we were welcomed into peoples’ homes and treated with great courtesy.

In time, I became to feel more at home here than in the gated communities of Cape Town. Life in these settlements is not easy. Yet their reputation is often born out of fear. Comments on Sidewalk Specials’ social media posts highlight the divide that still exists in present day South Africa: ‘is she going to eat those kittens??!,’ ‘these people are savages,’ and ‘they don’t deserve to have pets.’

The people of De Doorns may not dress their dogs in tutus. They can’t afford to send them to dog groomers or feed them prime cuts of meat. But poverty should not be a barrier to owning a pet. And now, thanks to the work of NGO’s like Sidewalk Specials, they can finally offer their best friends a better life.
